My academic journey has been shaped by determination and perseverance. Limited access to educational resources required me to work harder than many of my peers, yet these challenges strengthened my discipline and problem-solving abilities. Application is currently going on for Mastercard Foundation's $13 Million program for improved youth economic opportunities in the agrifood sector, tenable in Nigeria and Tanzania.

The Mastercard Foundation and Michigan State University partnered to help 15,000 young people access employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in the fast-growing horticulture, aquaculture, poultry, cassava and oilseed sectors in Tanzania and Nigeria.

WRITTEN BY ALEMAYEHU KONDE KOIRA

Consider a family in rural Africa welcoming a new child into the world. The child is loved but the family worries about how they will feed another mouth. They also regard their newest member as a pair of working hands, which in time will help them to earn more income, improve their livelihoods, and provide for each other. The worry and opportunity the family see in this new child speaks to the reality and complexity of food insecurity in Africa.

How to Finance Your Studies in the United States: Scholarships, Loans & Smart Planning

How to Finance Your Studies in the United States

Last updated: January 2026

Studying in the United States can be a life-changing opportunity, but it also comes with significant financial responsibilities. Tuition fees, accommodation, health insurance, books, and daily living expenses can quickly add up. Fortunately, there are several legitimate ways international students can finance their education.

1. Scholarships: Your Best First Option

Scholarships are the most desirable form of financial support because they do not require repayment. Many universities, foundations, and international organizations offer scholarships to talented and financially disadvantaged students.

  • Fully funded scholarships
  • Partial tuition scholarships
  • Merit-based and need-based awards

Always prioritize scholarships before considering loans.
